buildingSMART International, home of openBIM

buildingSMART is a neutral, international forum for initiating, developing, creating and adoption of open digital standards for BIM processes in buildings and infrastructures. Since it was incorporated in 1995, bSI has focused on solving industry interoperability challenges for data continuity and digital convergence in Construction. bSI is the worldwide authority – in contact with GS1, OGC and ISO – driving the digital transformation of the built asset economy through openBIM. The buildingSMART community is committed to creating and developing open digital ways of working for the built asset industry.

bSI’s misions and role

buildingSMART standards help asset owners and the entire supply chain work more efficiently and collaboratively through the entire project and asset lifecycle. Collectively technical programs drive the development and active use of open internationally-recognized standards, applications, training and certification procedures. This helps to support the wider uptake of BIM by owners, operators, the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) and facilities management (FM) industries across the buildings and infrastructure sectors.

  • Technology ‘know how’. buildingSMART is creating the core technical functionality (“the operating system”) for open digital information flows across the built asset industry.
  • Process expertise. bSI provides the organisational framework, technical and process support needed to help a multidisciplinary industry develop open standards that support its workflows and those of its customers and supply chains.
  • Global best practices.bSI provides a unique forum in which you can work with other industry organisations to innovate, create competitive advantages, and deliver real business benefits: reduced risks, time savings and lower costs.
  • International perspectives. buildingSMART, via a worldwide chapter network, helps industry organisations share an unrivalled breadth of international experience in setting standards relating to built asset delivery and operation.

buildingSMART continues to grow and develop to deliver more value through open and neutral values. By focusing on the overall benefits for society, buildingSMART is improving the built asset industry during a transformative age through innovative and agile standards and solutions” explains P.Mc Leamy, funding president.
